DMAA Advocacy

NAA Advocate

DMAA staff and members participate yearly at Advocate—NAA's annual advocacy conference—to meet with national representatives from the state of Michigan on the hill in Washington DC.

In 2026 DMAA met with representatives from the offices of all 13 members of Congress and had direct meetings with Senator Elissa Slotkin, Representative Shri Thanedar, and Representative Lisa McClain.

We are asking Members of Congress to pass these bills:

S. 470/H.R. 1078, RESPECT State Housing Laws Act - This bicameral, bipartisan bill finally sunsets the 30-day required Notice to Vacate (NTV) requirement put in place as part of the CARES Act during the COVID pandemic.

S. 2651, ROAD to Housing Act & H.R. 6644, Housing for the 21st Century Act - These two pieces of legislation are each congressional chamber's comprehensive housing packages. While different, both housing packages are bipartisan and broad-based.

PMAM Capitol Day

Each year, we travel to Lansing to meet directly with state legislators and discuss the issues and proposed bills that impact Michigan's multifamily housing industry. It's one of the most important things we do locally, putting our members in the room with the decision makers who shape housing policy in our state.

The upcoming Capitol Day is on May 13th, DMAA and other Michigan affiliates will be participating at the state capitol. The PMAM lobbyist will brief all participants on this year's industry talking points.

This year we are launching our Lunch & Lobby fundraising campaign for the state PAC. Lunches will be available between 11a-1p at the Kelly Cawthorne Conference Room on 208 N. Ave., Lansing, MI. There is a minimum donation of $25 for box lunches, and all proceeds go to the PMAM PAC fund thanks to our sponsor Rose Paving.

Property Management Association of Michigan PAC

Your contribution to PMAM PAC supports pro-housing legislators in Michigan!

As a professional in the multifamily housing industry, you understand two of the basic principles that guide our mission of housing advocacy. The Property Management Association of Michigan (PMAM) is the statewide affiliate of the National Apartment Association (NAA), which represents 6.3 million apartment homes across the nation. Education is the key to raising the level of professionalism in the property management industry, and legislative advocacy on behalf of the industry protects a property management company's bottom line.

Many local and statewide elected officials see the residential rental housing industry as one that needs supervision and as having deep pockets. Recent years have seen dramatic increases in insurance costs, utility expenses, and building/maintenance materials without the benefit of rental income growth. And the added expenses related to higher property taxes and the potential need to pull building permits for routine maintenance nearly deplete even a modest profit. The anticipated huge state deficit predicted raises further concerns about new fees and taxes to further burden the industry.

PMAM is working diligently to protect and serve the needs of the industry against punitive and wasteful legislation. Your involvement and support for pro-housing legislators that share our goals is needed.

Legislative Committee

The DMAA has a very active local legislative program monitoring all cities residing in Lapeer, Macomb, Oakland, St. Clair, and Wayne counties. We proactively scan for legislation that will adversely affect the apartment industry in the metro Detroit region. The Legislative Committee also fundraises for the National Apartment Association Political Action Committee and serves as a liaison to the Property Management Association of Michigan's Legislative Committee, which works to further the goals of the industry statewide.

The Legislative Committee meets the last Thursday of every other month at 4:00pm via scheduled Zoom Conference.
